Organic farming has become crucial today as it is basically the holistic approach to produce food. The farmers focus on the results of their farming practices on the crops, soil, livestock and food quality that they produce. Organic farmers are mainly involved in land management to ensure natural systems are incorporated rather than changing them. They make use of predatory invertebrates to control pests without using other pesticides that are man-made. The main objective of organic farmers is to choose a closed system as there is no scope for external inputs and there is minimal usage of waste outputs. Recycling plays an integral part here and manure extracted from livestock is the best resource.
Structure and fertility of soil
The soil being one of the useful resources, farmers put in best efforts to maintain its long term fertility. The soil that is biologically active decomposes organic particles faster and as a result, earthworms, fungi and bacteria are given importance. The soil organisms when decomposed, nutrients required for growth of plant are recycled into soil to feed crops. In addition to vegetation assessments, farmers also need to focus on soil structure. Soil should not be compacted through livestock during wet weather, especially in winters or huge farm machineries on the moist ground.
Pollution and fossil fuels
The top priority in organic farming involves keeping the farm and its environment free from pollutants. Waste management and ecological research on best farming practices is one of the main goals of organic farmers. Use of fossil fuel during production of foods is kept to the minimum as fossil fuel when burned release gasses that lead to air pollution and extracting fossil fuels may cause destruction in the farms. The manure produced by livestock is indeed polluting and hence organic farmers make use of it as natural fertilizers on fields. However, decomposition may take place during the summer and spring time, which helps plants to grow.
Quality of food
When organic food is produced and also sold locally, it is undoubtedly fresh when consumed and is of best quality. Fresh produce in grocery stores is usually imported which is why it lacks freshness and quality. If organic meat is not given antibiotic residues and medicines, the crops are completely out of synthetic pesticides which work beneficial for the environment. Some of the traditional techniques of organic farming include traditional rotations and organic breeding tactics where two different organisms breeds naturally and produce offspring. Thus, organic farming is highly important and farmers do their best to follow the best practices.
