WHO DOES ASCO REPRESENT? NOT THE CONDO OWNERS
Theoretically, ASCO is an association of condominiums in the Sheridan Road corridor. Each condo has a representative that is theoretically supposed to represent the position of their building at ASCO meetings. Then ASCO is theoretically supposed to take a position on each and every issue that reflects the collective views of its membership.
Unfortunately, there is a chasm between theory and reality, but in the case of ASCO and its work on lakefront expansion, the chasm is more like a canyon.
It has been shown that ASCO has sponsored Friends of the Parks and others presentations of lakefront expansion plans, unbeknownst to the vast majority of condo owners. ASCO has failed to notify condo’s of a key planning meeting on this topic until only hours before the meeting, claiming a “computer glitch”.
At the time of that “computer glitch” ASCO took a strong position on lakefront expansion, explaining the features they supported, and those they didn’t. Unfortunately, they forgot to query their membership for their views before taking their position.
Now it has been discovered that ASCO supports the concept of offshore islands: The Chicago Tribune article of March 20, 2008 states “the president of an association representing 33 buildings along Sheridan supported the idea of offshore islands”.
As best we can determine, that president is Sheli Lulkin and that association is ASCO.
It is clear that ASCO is not representing anyone in the impact zone. Anyone who thinks ASCO is the “go to group” to safeguard our interests is wrongly mistaken.
One can only speculate how many other issues important to residents here have been ignored or misrepresented by this so called organization.
Who does ASCO represent? Not the condo owners! Shame on them!
